Stegman’s Old Boys will also continue to compete in the Minnesota Recreational Soccer League and bring a stacked team to the Third Division, a team that pundits are tipping as favorites for the title.
“We have a strong division” said General Manager Nick Sindt “with River Otters, who are always good, in the mix along with Dynamo and BH United. We have a good chance to finish top, it will be tough but that’s football.”
The MRSL Old Boys will focus their attack around the explosive Luke Clayton, the club’s leading scorer and speed merchant who plundered 14 goals last season. Clayton will be supported on the flanks by more speedsters, with the blistering Zach Riggott and hyper-speeding Graham Campbell, both of who make Theo Walcott look as slow as a granny, patrolling the wings.
“We’ve got bags of pace in this team” said Club Chairman Dan Hoedeman “and a very strong central midfield that has the vision to use that speed to its fullest. Guys like Lance Farrell, Will Reynolds and new signing Nathan Proft have great technical ability and should be unlocking opposition defenses for fun.”
Reynolds will steel the Blues midfield and, with central defensive pairing Derric Johnson and Ben Savitt, provide a formidable barrier for opposition attacks.
“Last season we scored a lot, but were a bit of a sieve at the back at times” said Gary Erzberger “adding Will should help that, as well as bringing in the experienced Matt Gorrell who knows a thing or two about winning in this division, and Nick Sindt and Paul Shanafelt who will do good work at fullback. Them plus Steve Pomeroy and me of course equals a steely defensive wall reminiscent of Iron Man crossed with Troy Polamalu.”
The Old Boys face familiar foes his season, familiar foes that should provide a stern test to the Blues’ title credentials. Though it’s not the title that animates the SOBs as they circle the dates against BEEF United on the calendar.
“Can’t wait to stuff them twice more this season” said Hoedeman “and I’d love to relegate them like we did two years back. Bygones are bygones, at least until kickoff.”
