Stegman’s Old Boys Announce 2011 Squad

Stegman’s Old Boys Manager Jon Bisswurm announced, from the club’s Midtown training facility, the 2011 squad, which includes much of the experienced spine of players that achieved a third-place league finish last year as well as some relatively unknown players who will look to make a mark in their first-ever MRSL season.

Eleven of the nineteen players return from last year’s campaign, with Cole Erickson, Dan Hoedeman and Jon Bisswurm back to full fitness after injury.

“With the recovery from injury, it’s like we have three new players” said Bisswurm “all proven campaigners, all able to come right back into the team and contribute.”

There is a lot of excitement around the new faces that Bisswurm has brought in to the team. It will be a new-look attack for the Blues with youth and speed the dominant traits of the front four, with Paul Deignau, Sean Webb, Dan Warner and Pete Manning all with pace to burn.

“We’ve got some guys who can play ball” said Bisswurm “because, don’t forget, we still have Jon Scott, Aleksey Polukeyev and George Hanscom who have proven their quality at this level. Selecting the team is going to be challenging.”

The Old Boys are expecting a tough campaign, with the weight of expectation, the non-negotiable goal of a league title and what is sure to be strong league opposition causing concern.

Bisswurm said: “We know that this is a tough league. We saw last season that pretty much any team in the league can, on their day, get a result. We dropped points last season twice at Celtic, who finished sixth. It’s that kind of league.”

Former Minnesota FC defender Matt Gorrell is looking forward to taking on the challenge.

He said: “I’ve won this league before. We need to concentrate on each game as though it were a cup final and follow the direction of the FIFA Lab because points are so precious.”

Stegman’s Other Boys Announce 2011 Squad

Last season’s top scorer Dave Tesch will lead the line for Stegman’s Other Boys in their inaugural campaign with veteran defender Gary Erzberger wearing the captain’s armband, the club announced today along with the provisional squad.
There are still two open slots that the club plans to fill, with triallist Lei Tian from the University of Minnesota making a strong case for inclusion in the team.

“This group reminds me of last season’s Old Boys team” said Erzberger “we have a core group that I know can play together, guys like Graham [Campbell] and Big Dave [Tesch] and Derric [Johnson] and Ben [Savitt]. And we have added some new blood with guys like Al Vo and Sebastian Castro-Malaspina. I expect big things.”

Veteran goalkeeper Ryan Horstman will anchor the defense and will bring a level of experience to what promises to be a stingy backline.

The captain said: “It’s an established defense. And a strikeforce that combined hit double-digits last season. We have three games just three weeks away. In my own non-FIFA Lab way, I’ve thought about which members could play in the three games and contribute to the team. All I will say is that they will be both proficient and handsome.”

Erzberger gets a chance to look at his side against top-level MRSL talent in the SOB Cup on Saturday April 16th at Rice-Arlington Park in St Paul.
