Sunday’s matchup between Stegman’s Old Boys and Team Awesome is critical for both sides. The Old Boys who, with their win against United last week move up to third, face a Team Awesome reeling from last week’s defeat and in need of a win to remain in touch with the playoff places.
“This match is absolutely critical for us,” said General Manager Nick Sindt “knowing, as we do, that we face the top two teams away in our last two matches, we can’t afford a slip-up if we are to qualify for the postseason. Also, who names their team ‘Awesome’? If you have to advertise it, it probably isn’t true.”
The Old Boys ran out 3 – 1 winners in the first meeting between these two teams. However, despite the scoreline, Team Awesome presented a goal threat throughout and could easily spring a surprise in the tight confines of Arlington Park.
Adding to the wariness with which Team Awesome must be taken is a long list of absentees from the Old Boys first XI. Both Nick Sindt and Cole Erickson remain out with long-term injuries while Dan Hoedeman is suspended. Additionally, Dan Erickson and Jon Bisswurm are both questionable but not expected to play because of a back and ankle complaint respectively.
With so many players sidelined, increased responsibility is going to rest on the creative players. “From the beginning of the season we set out to play a possession-based game both in terms of creating offense and for its defensive merits as well” commented Manager Jon Bisswurm, “after all, it’s hard to score on us if you don’t have the ball. Losing so many players, especially in the defense, is going to put increased pressure on our creative players to retain the ball and use it smartly.” Particularly in the congested middle of the park, where Jon Scott, ‘Gorgeous’ George Hanscom and William Reynolds ply their trade, use of the ball is going to be critical to create scoring chances and to protect the back four.
“Team Awesome has a dangerous attack” said Bisswurm “and we’ll have to work hard to nullify it. I am confident that we will. And then we’ll be team awesome. As it were.”
The match, the final home match for the SOBs this season, kicks off at 6:30pm at Arlington Park.
